The 1990s were very memorable years. There were a lot of things that really defined that decade for many people that lived through it, and one of those things is the list of awesome Christmas movies that were released.
This decade was full of great movies in general from the time it started, right up until the time it ended, and some of those films were about Christmas, or they at least took place around that time. Some of the best holiday-themed films that everyone still enjoys every year these days came out then. Here are just a few of the best ones.
I’ll Be Home For Christmas
I’ll Be Home For Christmas came out in November of 1998, which was while actor Jonathan Taylor Thomas was at the height of his fame. In this film, the Home Improvement and Last Man Standing actor plays a college student who has some serious problems getting home to see his family in time for Christmas.
The movie also stars other very well-known actors and actresses as well. Some of the other famous people in this movie are Eve Gordon, Gary Cole, and Jessica Biel. Biel does a fantastic job of playing Thomas’ onscreen love interest in this hilarious family-friendly movie.
Jingle All The Way
Jingle All The Way is probably one of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s funniest films to date. The movie was released in American theaters on November 22, 1996, and lots of people still watch it every year because it has already become a classic film.
In this movie, the Terminator star plays a character named Howard Langston. Throughout much of the movie, he is having a lot of bad luck as he tries to get his son a Turbo Man doll. Lots of parents can relate to that because it is pretty tough to get popular toys when the holidays are near. The movie is full of great humor, and the end has a pretty good action scene in it as well.
Jack Frost
Actor Michael Keaton is one of the main stars of this film, which was released in November of 1998. This movie has some humorous moments, but there is a very serious side to is as well.
Keaton plays a father who passes away in the movie. But one year later, he is able to see his family again because he comes back. The only problem is that he comes back as a talking snowman. He has a young son, and he uses this opportunity to fix some of the things he did before he passed away. This should not be confused with the horror movie that has the same title. That one came out in 1997.
Home Alone
Home Alone is one of the best Christmas movies of the 1990s for multiple reasons. It came out in 1990, and it is full of humor, adventure, and some truly heartwarming moments.
It is also pretty relatable in some scenes as well. One particularly relatable moment is when Kate gets scared because she realizes that she left her son home alone. Pretty much any parent would feel that way if they did the same thing.
The only downside to the film is Kevin’s uncle, Frank. He speaks to Kevin says some horrible things to Kevin, whose parents should have definitely stopped that behavior instead of treating him and his wife to a trip to Paris.
The Santa Clause
The Santa Clause was released in the 1990s, and it is basically about the death of Santa Claus. The lead character is even somewhat responsible for his death, which does not make this sound like a great Christmas movie, but it really is.
Part of the reason why this is such a great film, especially for the holiday season, is because it is all about family. Tim Allen’s excellent acting abilities and his humor don’t exactly hurt the film, either. The movie also has some pretty good sequels as well, but they did not turn out to be as good as the first one.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
While some people consider The Nightmare Before Christmas to be a Halloween film, it still has a very holiday-themed vibe to it, and it was released in the early 1990s. There are many things about this movie that make it stand out from the rest of the Christmas movies that came out in that decade.
Some of the best scenes in the film are the ones that happen when the main character, Jack Skellington, is finding out what Christmas is. Another great thing about this movie is the music, which is very hard to forget. Director Tim Burton definitely created a classic Christmas film when he made this.
Mixed Nuts
Mixed Nuts is a holiday film that was released in 1994. Many of the movies that Steve Martin has starred in are often thought of as classics, and this is definitely one of them. The plotline basically centers around some of the events that make working on a crisis hotline an interesting job.
But the reason why this movie is considered a Christmas film is because it takes place near Christmas. It was directed by Nora Ephron, and she was also one of the people that wrote the screenplay for it. Adam Sandler also plays a character in this film.
The Ref
The Ref stars Kevin Spacey, Denis Leary, and Judy Davis, and it was released in 1994. This is definitely not a film that is appropriate for the entire family, as there is a lot of adult language in it, and some of the themes of the movie are very mature, but that did not stop the film from becoming a true classic.
Kevin and Judy play Lloyd and Caroline, a couple who cannot stop arguing with each other. Denis plays a robber named Gus, and he ends up having to spend a whole evening with them and their very dramatic family while they all celebrate Christmas together.
Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas
Mickey’s Once Upon A Christmas came out in the late 1990s, and it is really a film that is aimed at children. But it is pretty enjoyable for adults as well, since it features lots of classic cartoon characters that many people grew up watching.
Part of what makes this so different from other films is the fact that it is about three different stories. There are some very familiar voices in this movie, which is another thing that makes it fun to watch. Kelsey Grammar is the narrator of it. It is a cute movie for the whole family.
Miracle On 34th Street
This version of Miracle On 34th Street is a remake, but there are some things that make it really stand out as a great film on its own. The movie stars Elizabeth Perkins, Mara Wilson, Dylan McDermott, and Richard Attenborough.
Attenborough does a pretty fantastic job of playing Kris Kringle. The other stars of the film deliver some truly unforgettable performances as well. The movie also has some stunning cinematography, thanks to Julio Macat. Just the shots in this movie are enough to make it a fun film to watch, even though it is not an original story. Julio has also worked on other Christmas movies as well.
