If you have not watched Broad City, then you are missing out on one of the funniest television comedies of the last decade. The series stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer as two inseparable friends living in New York City and going on various misadventures involving their relationships, their professional life, and their love of weed.
Though a relatively small-scale show, it brings big laughs thanks to the hilarious leads. The show can bounce between outrageous humor, biting satire, and genuinely poignant moments making it a joy to watch any episode. However, if you’re looking to get into the show, check out some of the highest-rated episodes of Broad City courtesy of the users over at IMDb.
B&B-NYC (8.5)
It’s always fun to see the crazy schemes the girls come up with in order to make some money, and this episode features one of their better ideas. Taking advantage of the tourist market, they both decide to rent out their apartments for the night which sends them on a quest to find somewhere else to crash for the night.
From an ill-advised camping trip on the roof of the apartment to crashing a club party to Ilana unexpectedly scoring with NBA superstar Blake Griffin, this episode is a wild ride. It also features some great gags about New York tourism, and Griffin shows he has great comedic chops.
Sleep No More (8.5)
As the final season continued, the show began to mix in a little sentimentality with all the outrageous humor and the results were often effective. “Sleep No More” features the girls attending a bizarre interactive theater show while Abbi tries to work up the courage to tell Ilana that she’s moving away.
As they continue into the elaborate show and the tension continues to build, the episode takes on a bit of a surreal feeling. Watching the two friends deal with the emotions of this big change is surprisingly moving but there’s also plenty of laughs to be had.
The Last Supper (8.7)
“The Last Supper” is one of the many episodes in which the girls attempt to live the high life and fail miserably. In celebration of Abbi’s birthday, and with her dad taking care of the bill, the girls have a fancy night out at a very high-class restaurant—and they quickly prove that they are decidedly not fancy.
The episode goes from a cute story about the girls treating themselves to a hilarious gross-out comedy disaster. Ilana decides to ignore the fact that she’s allergic to seafood while Abbi makes some unsettling hygienic discoveries of her own. It makes for an unforgettable meal.
Wisdom Teeth (8.7)
Anyone who has had their wisdom teeth taken out can attest that the drugs you are given can make it a very interesting experience if you can even remember it. This provides the set up for this surreal episode in which Abbi has the procedure done, leaving Ilana as her guardian for the day.
The drug-fueled mayhem that Abbi gets into is hilarious, as are Ilana’s hysteric attempts to track down her BFF after she goes missing. But the highlight of the episode is Jaime, who is given the simple task of picking up some frozen yogurt for Abbi, which turns into an existential crisis.
Two Chainz (8.7)
The show often delivers a hugely entertaining episode based on a very simple premise. “Two Chainz” is a great example of one of these episodes as we follow Abbi and Ilana around the city on their various appointments while also desperately looking for a bathroom to use.
It might seem like an overly sitcom-y premise that couldn’t sustain an entire episode, but the show embraces its weirdness to deliver big laughs and unexpected detours. The whole thing builds to the two girls once again proving that they have a knack for making fools of themselves.
Burning Bridges (8.7)
Relationships are just one of the many things Ilana and Abbi struggle with in their day-to-day life. These problems come to a head in this episode in which Ilana’s parents celebrate their anniversary just as the girls’ own relationships experience their own issues.
Ilana struggles with her feelings over being dumped by Lincoln, while Abbi tries to avoid going to the next relationship stage with Trey. The episode is filled with the kind of hectic humor that makes the show so much fun while also including a great and unexpected Mrs. Doubtfire homage.
Stories (8.7)
The show has a lot of fun poking fun at the youthful trends of today while also using them to great effect in the show. “Stories” is the best example of that as we follow Abbi and Ilana on a pilgrimage around the city celebrating Abbi’s birthday and see their adventures told through their endless Instagram stories.
This is Broad City’s version of a found-footage movie, and it works surprisingly well. Their antics are hilarious as always, but the technology allows for so many hidden jokes. It’s an inventive and funny episode that stands out as something new.
Coat Check (8.9)
This something charming about how Abbi and Ilana can take even the most basic of jobs, and turn it into a disaster. In this episode, they find themselves working at a coat check booth at an upscale party. But, due to Ilana’s misunderstanding of their job, things quickly go awry.
The episode has great moments for both girls, as Ilana falls for a girl who looks exactly like her, while Abbi meanwhile shares a girls’ night with Kelly Ripa that turns out much wilder than she anticipated. It’s another fun journey through the stranger aspects of big city living with these characters.
Broad City (9.0)
Though fans were sad to see the series end after five wonderful seasons, the bright side is that it ended in a satisfying, funny and poignant way. This final episode deals with the final day the girls have together as Abbi prepares to move to Colorado.
Their day takes them on one of their classic adventures which includes breakfast sandwiches and toilets, but they ultimately have to face saying goodbye to each other. Though this marks the end of their adventures in New York City, it proves that it is far from the end of their friendship.
Knockoffs (9.2)
“Knockoffs” is an episode that combined the show’s love of New York-centric humor with its love of gross-out humor. It also once again brings back Ilana’s entertaining parents as the family comes together to mourn the loss of an elder relative.
If you thought that setup would make for a more serious episode, you’re wrong. Ilana and her mother take the opportunity to search for the best knockoff handbags in the city while Abbi deals with an unusual request from her new partner. It is a great episode that sends the girls off in their own horrible adventures that bring huge laughs.
