There are so many raunchy comedies centered around a group of male characters. So in 2011, when Bridesmaids came out, it broke the mold.
The movie focused on Annie, played by Kristen Wiig, a woman who begins to re-evaluate her life after being asked to be a maid of honor for her best friend Lillian, played by Maya Rudolph. The movie also stars Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, and Wendi McLendon-Covey.
Totally R-rated, there were some cringeworthy moments along with plenty of hilarity as the girls gather to help their friend choose a wedding dress, plan her wedding, and have a bachelorette party.
There are some key moments that sum up the film, and these hilarious memes showcase some of them.
Help Me, I’m Poor
Annie is happy for her friend but also upset about her own life. Once owner of her own bakery, the 30-something-year-old woman had to close it due to the recession. Then, her boyfriend left her, she lost her savings, and she had to take a job as a sales clerk at a jewelry store and live with her sister and an English immigrant.
In this meme, she’s hallucinating on an airplane headed to Las Vegas, thanks to a combination of sedatives and alcohol, and keeps saying the silliest things. Because of her financial situation, and unwillingness to accept Helen paying for her flight, she sits in economy while the rest of the girls sit in first class, and she definitely makes the most of it!
Morning Classes
Rose Byrne’s character Helen is the beautiful, uppity wife of the groom’s boss who has been asked to be a bridesmaid. Naturally, Annie doesn’t like her and is jealous of Helen’s close relationship with her best friend.
Helen is genuinely nice but everything she says is interpreted as being arrogant because of her beauty, status, and wealth. So while she might really be sympathetic about something, Annie has a hard time believing she’s a genuine person and thinks she’s just being condescending.
You Doooo?
This meme shows Annie at the height of her altered state on the airplane, having a fake genuine conversation with someone where she’s feigning particular interest in what they have to say.
This was one of the most memorable scenes of the movie as Annie went on to embarrass herself and all of her friends. In fairness, she was hallucinating due to taking both a sedative and alcohol to help her deal with her fear of flying. But in the end, she caused the plane to have to make an emergency landing.
Cut The Tags Off!
Wendi McLendon-Covey plays Rita, Lillian’s cousin who is dying to take a break from her life as the mom of three children. This line perfectly describes something every mom has experienced: buying a flashy piece of clothing with hopes that one day you’ll actually get to go somewhere, without the husband and kids, and wear it.
Of all the girls, she’s the one who wants, and needs, this party time the most. She’s dying to break out that tube top and finally cut the sales tag off!
It’s Coming Out Of Me Like Lava!
If you’ve seen the movie, you know exactly what this quote references. While trying on dresses, the entire wedding party, minus Helen, gets food poisoning and starts vomiting and experiencing violent bouts of diarrhea. Frantic to get it out, they run around like chickens desperately trying to find any place to relieve themselves.
In one of the most memorable scenes from the movie, Megan (Melissa McCarthy), the groom’s sister, runs to the first place she can find – a sink – and lets it go. Her description? That it’s coming out of her like lava. Ewww!
Ready to Party!
Hallucinating from a mix of sedatives and alcohol meant to help her get over her fear of flying, Annie comes to see her friends in first class and is ready and rearing to go. In yet another memorable scene from the movie, she talks about how ready she is to party.
Clearly her words are masking insecurities about her life, and it’s the drugs and alcohol talking. But when you’re ready to party, you probably feel just as euphoric as she did in this moment.
Oscar Nods
Look, we shouldn’t deny an actor the ability to have a diverse and interesting career. And every A-list actor has had some role they weren’t proud of at some point in their life. McCarthy, however, seems to have really enjoyed this role as an unfiltered, crass woman.
Nonetheless, considering the vile things she did in this movie, it’s hard to reconcile the character with the fact that the actor went on to get nominated for an Oscar…for the role! She’s come a long way and has shown her tremendous range as an actor. McCarthy deserves an Oscar nod, but we gave a hard time believing that it should have been for this role.
Check Out My Undercarriage
In this hilarious scene, McCarthy tries to seduce a man on the plane (played by her real-life husband Ben Falcone) who she is convinced is an air marshal.
Of course, there’s nothing sexy about the way she tries to get him interested in her, including referring to her nether region as her undercarriage and discussing the heat coming from it. McCarthy played the part beautifully as the strange groom’s sister who was simply tagging along for the festivities and was very different from all the other girls.
What Have We Done?
Who hasn’t woken up after a night of partying or a weekend away and thought “oh my, what did I just do?” Maybe your actions weren’t totally crazy and just involved drinking far too much an embarrassing yourself. And maybe they went further, reaching epic heights like you might have seen in a movie like The Hangover (think face tattoos and tigers.)
In any case, this meme of two of the main cast members from the film, Kristen Wiig and Rose Byrne, with the former topless in the car, says it all.
Don’t Like Bridesmaids?
Bridesmaids isn’t for everyone, but there’s no denying that it’s a seriously funny movie that can rival any male-led raunchy comedy. The cast is stellar and the moments hilarious.
The movie grossed $26 million during just its opening weekend, and went on to make a total of $288 million, becoming Judd Apatow’s top-grossing production to date and the only movie to give him an Academy Award nomination. It also helped create a new genre of raunchy female-led companies. What’s not to like about that?
