The CW is one TV network that shows no signs of backing down. Owned by CBS Corporation and Warner Brothers, hence “CW,” the network constantly adds new stories to their roster. Most shows end up doing well with one fanbase or another.
Mostly known for their several superhero shows including Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, Legends of Tomorrow, and most recently Black Lightning, the CW also host programs about supernatural hunters, vampires, and improv comedy groups. In short, there is something for everyone over at The CW.
The network has had its fair share of drama lately as Andrew Kreisberg, a writer and producer for the Arrowverse, was fired for assault allegations. However, popular stars, such as Stephen Amell, continue to be a hero both on and off screen.
While these shows have dedicated workers behind-the-scenes, they would be nothing without the cast in front of the cameras. Some actors are up-and-coming and others live in the spotlight, but both can either love meeting their fans and giving back to the community or let the fame go to their heads and just be downright mean.
Here are the 10 CW Stars Who Are Sweethearts (And 6 Who Are Jerks).
16. Jerk: K.J. Apa
Keneti James Apa, an up-and-coming actor, is one CW star who did not have much experience before his role of Archie on Riverdale. Many people were cheering for him on the show until news came out that he supported body shaming and degradation of women.
Last May, Apa liked a post on Instagram that was blatantly making fun of people who are overweight. A month prior, Apa posted a picture to his Snapchat story that displayed 15 reasons why beer is better than a woman.
Not only are these two incidents incredibly offensive, he also let down many young fans who were looking up to him. It looks like the drama in Riverdale happens both on and off screen.
15. Sweetheart: Ian Somerhalder
Ian Somerhalder may have gotten some unwarranted hate in 2015 for making fans cry when he just wanted some personal space, but this The Vampire Diaries star is still a sweetheart in most people’s eyes.
He was justifiably frustrated back in 2010 when the Deepwater Horizon oil rig was destroyed. With the marine and wildlife harmed by the oil spill in his hometown of Louisiana, Somerhalder shot PSA’s to inform people about how they could donate and help Louisiana recover from the tragedy.
He also joined Dawn in 2015 for their “We All Love Wildlife” and “International Bird Rescue” campaigns. Somerhalder may be a blood-sucking vampire on screen, but in real life he is a sweet guy who has a big heart when it comes to animals.
14. Sweetheart: Stephen Amell
Stephen Amell is, of course, known for his chiseled abs and his lead role in Arrow, but he also happens to be an all-around nice guy. Over the past few years, Amell has supported a non-profit organization called F**k Cancer, which aims to detect, prevent, and unite people against the disease.
In the first year of the campaign, Amell managed to help raise over one million dollars for this cause by promoting and selling merchandise with his image and the F**k Cancer logo.
Amell has also proven time and time again that he loves his fans. He regularly reaches out to fans via Twitter and even went as far as inviting a grieving family to Dallas Comic Con, where he gave them VIP tickets and dedicated his panel to the family’s late son.
Amell has proven that he is just as much a hero as his on-screen character Oliver Queen.
13. Jerk: Katie Cassidy
Not everyone on Arrow has the superhero chops in real life like Stephen Amell does. Katie Cassidy used to be known as a scream queen for roles in Taken and A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010), but she found a new fanbase in 2012 when she started playing Laurel Lance, aka Black Siren, aka Black Canary, on Arrow.
Unfortunately for her fans, she doesn’t seem to love them as much as they love her. She frequently cancels appearances at conventions like Dallas Comic Con’s Fan Days in 2015 and 2016.
Her reasoning? She claims she is filming Arrow, but her Instagram says differently. In 2015, her Instagram showed her shopping around the Dallas area, and in 2016 it revealed that she was visiting New York. Whoops.
12. Sweetheart: Colin Mochrie
Whose Line Is It Anyway? used to be an ABC Family favorite until it was cancelled in 2007, but thankfully The CW was able to revive the show in 2013. When the show was brought back, series regular Colin Mochrie came with it.
Colin Mochrie and his transgender daughter came into the spotlight in 2017 when Mochrie posted a Tweet online saying, “My 90-yr-old mother-in-law and 87-yr-old mother love and acceptance of our trans daughter warms me. Wonder why some who are younger can’t.”
Despite seeing some backlash from the Tweet, Mochrie has shown his daughter nothing but love and support during her transition and has spoken about the importance of education on gender identity.
If that weren’t enough, Mochrie and his wife have worked with the charities World Vision and Habitat for Humanity in an attempt to give back to their community.
11. Sweetheart: Melissa Benoist
Melissa Benoist has come a long way from her role as Marley Rose on Glee. She has frequently proven to not just be playing Kara Zor- El on The CW’s Supergirl, but also the super woman in real life as well.
With her Supergirl image, Benoist quickly became a feminist icon in our popular culture. This became most apparent in the beginning of 2017, when she attended the Women’s March in Washington with her sister, best friend, and manager.
Benoist also loves meeting her young fans and being an inspiration to young girls around the world. She has occasionally surprised fans at screenings of Supergirl and even took some adorable pictures with a Girl Scouts Troop that visited the set. It’s reassuring to know that the Girl of Steel is both a role model on TV and in real life.
10. Jerk: Robert Knepper
Robert Knepper is by no means new to Hollywood. He made his acting debut back in 1986 with a show called The Paper Chase and has continued to act ever since.
In 2015, he found a role on The CW’s iZombie as the character Angus McDonough. Knepper will now be a series regular going into season 4, but assault allegations have begun to creep out, making his future on the show uncertain.
Since November 2017, five women have come forward and accused Knepper of being aggressive towards them. Hollywood has been cracking down on these types of allegations ever since the Harvey Weinstein story broke out, so one has to wonder how much longer executives will keep him on iZombie.
9. Sweetheart: Jensen Ackles
Jensen Ackles has one of the most recognizable faces on any CW show today. Coming from a background consisting of Dark Angel and My Bloody Valentine, Ackles has now starred in Supernatural for 13 years and has become a fan favorite within the Supernatural community.
Ackles stands as one actor who knows the importance of fans. Over the years, he has attended several conventions, including the Official Supernatural Convention, to meet and take pictures with fans.
He may fight demons on Supernatural, but in real life Ackles strives to help people with their own demons. Ackles also works closely with co-star Jared Padalecki on his “Always Keep Fighting” campaign, which works to combat mental illness and addiction.
8. Sweetheart: Grant Gustin
Grant Gustin may appear to be a meanie if you saw his character on Glee, but it turns out that the star of The CW’s The Flash really is a sweetheart.
Gustin definitely has not let the fame go to his head since he loves posing with fans on the street and at conventions. He even has fun with the paparazzi by making silly poses when he notices them.
Emily Bett Rickards, who plays Felicity Smoak in the Arrowverse, even mentioned that it was clear how talented and kind Gustin was from the very first day of filming.
Against fans wishes, DC executives hired Ezra Miller to play The Flash for the cinematic version of the character instead of Grant Gustin. Instead of whining about the casting decision, Gustin was a good sport about not getting the role and told fans that he was excited for Miller.
7. Jerk (sort of): Jared Padalecki
While Jared Padalecki has accomplished some incredible feats with his “Always Keep Fighting” campaign, he does have a darker side. Those who follow Padalecki on social media are aware that he is known for complaining about customer service.
Padalecki once posted a picture of a waitress at the Constantine restaurant in Minneapolis and more recently of a gentleman working at the Wynn casino in Las Vegas, stating that they were the reason why he would never return.
If you have a bad experience someplace, sharing your opinions is more than acceptable, but posting their name and picture online for the entire world to see seems a bit excessive.
If the average Joe did this, it probably wouldn’t go anywhere, but Padalecki is a worldwide celebrity and publicly shaming someone online seems not only unprofessional, but immature.
6. Sweetheart: Justin Baldoni
Justin Baldoni may be another on this list known for his chiseled abs, but this Jane the Virgin star has recently come up for his remarks about masculinity.
A few days ago, this father-of-the-year nominee wrote an opinion editorial for the Huffington Post, talking about what society expects from a man, and what he wants his newborn son to know about masculinity.
He claims that his newborn taught him to not be so self-conscious about his appearance because he does not want those habits to “emulate” within his son once he grows older.
This seems to be a passionate topic for Baldoni since he is the host of a show called Man Enough, which focuses on what he touched on in his Huffington Post article.
5. Sweetheart: Daniel Gillies
Elijah Mikaelson may be a ruthless vampire in The Originals, but actor Daniel Gillies in real life is actually a super cool guy. He is not afraid to use his celebrity status for a good cause, which fans realized last year.
South Sudan has been in a civil war since 2013, and east Africa continues to struggle with famine. Millions of refugees have traveled to Uganda just to keep their families safe, and that is where Gillies headed.
His plan was to use his celebrity status to make more people aware of the catastrophe that is happening in Africa and to force the United States to not be a “silent partner” when it comes to foreign aid.
He traveled to Uganda with an organization called Oxfam and was successfully able to spread his message to his fans and people all over the world.
4. Jerk: Isaiah Washington
Today Isaiah Washington is known for playing Thelonious Jaha on CW’s The 100, but he is more known for his comments that resulted in him getting fired from Grey’s Anatomy in 2007.
After an altercation with actor T.R. Knight, Washington used a homophobic slur against the actor. The news of this made its way to the public, and fans were outraged at his remarks.
Clearly, he did not learn his lesson, as he made another anti-gay remark backstage at the Golden Globes which led to his departure from the show. He made a brief appearance on Grey’s Anatomy in 2014, but people have not been able to look at him the same way since the incident.
Washington seems to now be watching what he says, but that doesn’t make him any less of a jerk.
3. Sweetheart: Danielle Panabaker
Danielle Panabaker grew up playing roles in the Disney movies Read It and Weep, Stuck in the Suburbs, and the superhero flick Sky High. She is yet again starring in another superhero adventure, The Flash, which is arguably one of the most popular shows currently on The CW.
Panabaker plays Caitlin Snow, who eventually turns into the villain Killer Frost. However, in real life Panabaker is nothing close to a villain. Panabaker worked alongside Arrow co-star Katie Cassidy in designing a t-shirt that helped raise money for the Step Up Women’s Network.
Step Up helps young girls by inspiring them and giving them the resources to be professional women. You can catch Panabaker on The Flash on Tuesday nights as Killer Frost, but just know that she would warm your heart in real life.
2. Sweetheart: John Barrowman
John Barrowman has been a charismatic Hollywood heart throb ever since his appearance on Doctor Who in 2005 as Captain Jack Harkness. Take a look at any photo someone has taken with Barrowman, and you can tell that he loves his fans.
His photo-ops are often hilarious or NSFW, and fans just cannot get enough of him. On Arrow, Barrowman plays Malcolm Merlyn, aka Dark Archer, who constantly flipped between being good and bad. However, in real life Barrowman is all good.
Barrowman has ten different charities hosted on his website, which he supports and has donated to in the past. He even used charity auctions to support places like the Sojourner Family Peace Center in Wisconsin and a children’s hospice in Wales called Tŷ Hafan.
1. Jerk: Andrew Kreisberg
While this man may not be a star in any CW shows, he is by far the most vile person who has been associated with the network. Kreisberg wrote a few episodes here and there for multiple television shows including Star Wars: The Clone Wars, The Simpsons, and Fringe, but did not find a steady job until he began working on The CW’s superhero shows.
Kreisberg was a writer and producer for The CW’s superhero roster including, Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow. Prior to his termination, a staggering nineteen people had come forward to accuse Kreisberg of misconduct.
According to Variety, Kruisberg’s offenses involved unwanted touching, massages, and other signs of affection. Thankfully, The CW was quick to begin an investigation, and Kreisberg was fired last November.
Like many people who have been acting inappropriately in Hollywood, Kreisberg’s career seems to be over, and rightfully so.
